Pilger, York and Sulcer all receive soccer all-conference honors

DES MOINES – Three Iowa Wesleyan College soccer players received honors yesterday as the Midwest Collegiate Conference released its men’s and women’s soccer all-conference teams for the 2008 season.

Karly York (Jr.-Waukee, Iowa) and Jillian Sulcer (Fr.-Mechanicsburg, Ill.) both were named Honorable Mention All-MCC on the women’s side, while Jacob Pilger (Jr.-Burlington, Iowa) also received honorable mention on the men’s all-conference team.

York received conference recognition for the third straight year and for the second consecutive year as a defender. She was honorable mention all-conference as a midfielder as a freshman. The past two years she has spent the majority of her time leading the defense as a defender while also playing a few matches in goal. This season she had two assists and also recorded seven saves in three matches in goal.

Sulcer played both as a forward and on defense and was one of the Tigers’ leaders on both units. She finished third on the team with three goals scored, including game-winning scores against both Central College and Knox College. She is the first IWC freshman since York in 2006 to receive all-conference recognition.

Pilger moved to the defense this year after playing last year in the midfield, when he led the team in scoring. This season the junior led the back line and also had one goal and played in 18 games, starting 14 despite dealing with an injury during the season. It is the first time he has received all-conference recognition.

Both IWC soccer teams finished ninth in the MCC in the regular season before winning their opening round conference tournament matchups. The Tiger teams were both eliminated in the tournament quarterfinals.
