DeVries new owner of school three-point record

MOUNT PLEASANT – Iowa Wesleyan College junior guard Ali DeVries (Bellevue, Iowa) recently put her name at the top of the Tiger record books, breaking the school’s record for career three-point field goals made by a Tiger women’s basketball player.

DeVries set the school record against Clarke College on Dec. 6 when her second three-pointer of the game gave her 149 career three-pointers made. She broke the record of 148 threes made by Jodie Houchin in two seasons from 2001-03.

DeVries came into the season with 137 three-pointers in her first two years at IWC. She has since added to the record in wins against the College of St. Mary (Neb.) and York (Neb.) College and losses to Morningside College and Briar Cliff University and currently has 162 triples in her career.

A First Team All-Midwest Collegiate Conference pick last year, DeVries also is closing in on the 1,000-point mark for her career. Currently at 881 points for her career, she needs 119 points to become the 11th player in IWC women’s basketball history to score 1,000 career points.

DeVries is not the only current Tiger making her mark on the record books, as fellow guard Rachel Mitchell (Sr.-Des Moines, Iowa) also is moving up the school’s all-time assists chart. Against Clarke, Mitchell recorded her 277th career assist to move past Raegan Terrell (1998-2001) for sixth place on the school’s all-time list in that category. Mitchell currently is at 291 assists for her career and with one more will tie Dee Cameron (1982-86) for fifth all-time with 292 assists. She is also just seven assists shy of tying Laurie Veiseth (1985-88) with 298 for fourth all-time.

The Tigers have concluded their non-conference schedule and will resume conference play on Saturday when they host Ashford University at 1 p.m. at Ruble Arena.
