CRETE, NEB. – Doane College shot 48 percent from the floor and Iowa Wesleyan College couldn’t keep up in a 70-56 loss Friday night, Wesleyan’s first loss of the season.
Doane, also known as the Tigers, made nine of 19 three-point attempts (47.4%) and held IWC to 35.8% shooting as the IWC Tigers dropped to 2-1 on the season and lost the first game of a three-game swing through Nebraska this weekend.
Doane improved to 4-2 as IWC shot just 19 of 53 for the game. Wesleyan had a 26-12 advantage on points in the paint and out-rebounded Doane 37-32 but shot just 5-for-21 on three-point attempts and had 18 turnovers.
Wesleyan led the early stages of the game, but Doane took a 10-9 lead on a free throw by Trent Volk with 12:59 left in the first half and never trailed again. IWC trailed 37-31 at halftime and was behind by as many as 17 points in the second half.
The Tigers did crawl back within 10 points with 3:05 left when Da’kari Shelby (Sr.-O’Fallon, Ill.) hit two free throws to make it 64-54, but IWC scored just two more points the rest of the way.
Brett Humpal (Sr.-Decorah, Iowa) led Iowa Wesleyan with 14 points and added nine rebounds. Shelby was the only other player in double figures scoring with 13 points and also led the team in rebounds with 11. Josh Hogue (Jr.-Oxford, Iowa) added nine points off the bench.
Jake Johnson led Doane with 19 points and was one of three players in double figures. The Doane Tigers hit 24 of their 50 shots in the game and scored 22 points off Wesleyan turnovers.
IWC continues its three games in three days in Nebraska with a game at Dana College in Blair, Neb. on Saturday at 3 p.m.
