MOUNT PLEASANT – Iowa Wesleyan College recently announced that it has hired Anne Dreyer as its track and field and cross country coach.
Dreyer, who began her position this week, replaces Lane Levine as head coach of both the men’s and women’s track and field teams at IWC. She also will be the coach for the men’s and women’s cross country programs, which were reinstated earlier this year and will begin competition in 2009-10 after a 10-year hiatus at Wesleyan.
IWC’s newest coach comes to the college from the University of South Dakota, where she was a graduate assistant coach with the track and cross country teams the past two years while completing her master’s degree in Exercise Science. During her time there USD sent a number of athletes to national competition, including the women’s cross country team which finished ninth at the NCAA Division II championships in 2007.
Dreyer, 24, is a native of Rushville, Neb., and completed her bachelor’s degree at Doane College in Crete, Neb. She was a four-year participant in both track and cross country at Doane and was a three-time qualifier for the NAIA national meet in both sports. She also was an NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete and an honor student, receiving a degree from Doane in Spanish.
“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to coach at IWC,” Dreyer said. “I believe there is a lot of potential for the track and field program and I am looking forward to working with the wonderful student-athletes at IWC. I am also excited about the opportunity and challenge of reinstating the cross country program here and believe that it will add tremendously to the success of the track and field program.”
Dreyer takes over as track coach after Levine stepped down from the position to concentrate on his teaching duties at IWC. He will stay with the track and cross country programs as an assistant coach. She will begin coaching the track teams immediately and will spend the next year recruiting and building the cross country program before its re-launch in 2009.
The hiring of Dreyer ends a search for a replacement for Levine that lasted longer than expected and extended through much of the summer. The position was originally accepted by Gary Labonte in May, but Labonte took another position several weeks later before starting at IWC.
