Federal and State Grants

General Eligibility Requirements

To receive financial aid from federal and state programs the student must:

1. Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
2. Be registered with Selective Service if male, at least 18 years of age and born after December 31, 1959, and not currently a member of the active armed forces.
    (Register online at www.sss.gov).
3. Demonstrate financial need if applying for need-based aid.
4. Be working toward a degree or certificate at Iowa Wesleyan College.
5. Make satisfactory academic progress as defined by IWC’s Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (link)
6. Not be in default on any loan or owe a refund on any grant made under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, at any institution.

Grants

FEDERAL GRANTS

Federal PELL Grant - The Pell Grant is for students from low and middle income families who show financial need as determined by the FAFSA.  Amounts are determined by the U.S. Department of Education.  2010-11 Federal PELL Grants ranged from $602 to $5,550.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) - available to undergraduates receiving PELL and demonstrating exceptional financial need. Deadline for returning students to receive SEOG is April 1.

National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grants (SMART) of $4,000 are awarded to students in their third and fourth years of study. Recipients must be a Federal PELL recipient, a U.S. citizen, enrolled full-time, majoring in a designated field of study, enrolled in courses to complete major, and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0.  http://studentaid.ed.gov/PORTALSWebApp/students/english/SmartGrants.jsp

IOWA GRANTS

Iowa Tuition Grants are available for Iowa residents who file the FAFSA form on or before July 1. The maximum individual grant award is $3840* for the 2012-13 academic year with EFC of $13,500 or less.

Iowa Grants are awarded up to $1,000 per academic year to students from Iowa who show high need for financial assistance.

* In the event that available state funds will be insufficient to pay the full amount of each approved grant due to the state’s fiscal condition, the Iowa College Student Aid Commission will administratively reduce the maximum awards to an amount less than the statutory maximum.
