MC PHERSON, KAN. – A Midwest winter did nothing to cool off the Iowa Wesleyan College men’s golf team, as the Tigers won their opening tourney of the spring season on Tuesday.
IWC finished first among 16 teams at the Bethany Swede Spring Invitational, coming from behind on the second day to defeat a strong field of teams. The Tigers’ two-day score of 594 held off nationally ranked Bethany, the tourney hosts, as well as Grand View University and Southwestern (Kan.) College, a pair of schools who, like, Wesleyan, are in the Receiving Votes category of the most recent Golf World/Nike NAIA coaches’ poll.
The Tigers came through in cold March conditions, coming back after a score of 295 on the first day that was fourth-best behind all three teams. IWC shot a 299 on Tuesday in 28 degree weather and heavy winds that made for a -10 wind chill. The Tigers’ score playing in the cold was seven strokes better than Bethany and 14 strokes better than anyone else in the field.
Adam Lindsay (Sr.-Aberdeenshire, Scotland) was the star for Wesleyan, grabbing medalist honors by firing a 71 on Monday and a 68 on the second day for a total of three-under par 139. Lindsay finished seven shots ahead of his nearest competitors, including teammate Adam Moyers (Jr.-Burlington, Iowa), who tied for second with a total of 146. Moyers shot a 70 on the first day and followed it up with a 76 on Tuesday.
Mark Cleary (Fr.-London, England) finished just outside the top 10, tying for 11th with a score of 153. Jeff Zieber (So.-Cameron, Mo.) also tied for 20th with a 156, and Emery McGraw (So.-Loveland, Colo.) was 37th with a 162. The first round of the tourney was played at the Turkey Creek Golf Course in Salina, Kan., while the final round was played at the Elks Country Club in McPherson, Kan.
Iowa Wesleyan is ranked 29th in the most recent Golf World/Nike NAIA coaches’ poll, which was released Wednesday. The Tigers received 10 votes in the poll and come into the spring season with momentum after finishing the fall season strong. IWC concluded the fall by finishing tied for fourth in the NAIA Preview Invitational in Davenport against a field loaded with ranked teams and national powers.
