Barcelo takes MCC honors after huge weekend

DES MOINES – Iowa Wesleyan College outfielder Roderick Barcelo (Jr.-Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) has been named the Midwest Collegiate Conference Baseball Player of the Week, as announced today by the conference.

Barcelo received the award after a huge three games against Ashford University this past weekend. The junior had eight hits and hit five home runs in the series, driving in 11 as the Tigers swept the Saints by scores of 9-5, 19-1 and 9-5. His biggest game came in the 19-1 win in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, when he had three homers and drove in eight, in all finishing the game 4-for-4 with four runs scored.

Barcelo hit .533 over the past week with a total of eight hits in 15 at bats over four games. He scored seven runs and was walked twice and helped IWC to a perfect 5-0 record last week.

For the season Barcelo is now hitting .281 in 24 games with 18 hits and 19 runs scored. His power surge pushed him up to a team-best seven homers for the year, and his 19 RBIs ranks third on the squad.

Iowa Wesleyan has won seven straight games to improve to 18-10. It is the Tiger baseball team’s best start since 1995, when IWC finished with a school-best 34-12 record, the best winning percentage and second-most wins in a season in school history.

The Tigers’ games Tuesday against St. Ambrose University were postponed due to rain. The next scheduled contest for Wesleyan is Saturday, when William Penn University is scheduled to visit for a weekend series including a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m. The games would be the home opener for IWC, which still has yet to play a home game this season.
