MOUNT PLEASANT – The Iowa Wesleyan College men’s basketball program has landed one of the top players in Southeast Iowa for its 2009-10 recruiting class, as Central Lee High School standout Brett Azinger has signed a letter of intent to attend the school.
Azinger, a native of Donnellson, Iowa, was named an all-state selection three times by the Iowa Newspaper Association. This season the 6-1 guard was named second team all-state in Class 2A and led the Central Lee Hawks to their first-ever state tournament appearance.
Azinger was a four-year starter at Central Lee for Head Coach Clay Vass and departs the school as its all-time leading scorer with 1,559 career points. This season he averaged 19.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and two assists per game while shooting 42.1% from the field and 79.2% from the free throw line and making 58 three-pointers on the season.
Along with all of the numbers, Azinger also was known for his willingness and ability to take and make the big shot at Central Lee. He also played in an up-tempo offensive system at Central Lee, which should make him a natural fit with a Tiger program that this year averaged over 78 points per game.
“We feel Brett is a great fit for our system and style of play,” said IWC Head Coach Alan Magnani. “Through the recruiting process he has developed a comfort level with not only our program, but all of Iowa Wesleyan. He possesses the talent and ability to be a special player in our program. We all look forward to seeing him improve and mature as both a player and person during his years at Iowa Wesleyan.”
Azinger will join a Tiger program that is coming off a 20-11 season that included a Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament title and a trip to the NAIA Division II National Tournament. Wesleyan loses six seniors off this year’s team including All-American Brett Humpal, but will welcome back Honorable Mention All-MCC guard Keenan Stanbridge and four other contributors as well as several redshirts.
