FULTON, MO. – The Iowa Wesleyan College men’s golf team made a second-day charge through the field to finish second at the William Woods University Spring Invitational held Monday and Tuesday at the par-72 Tanglewood Golf Club.
The Tigers capitalized on colder conditions on Tuesday to post the low individual and team rounds of the tourney and move from eighth after the first day to a second place finish. IWC posted a two-day score of 615 strokes, finishing only behind Grand View University and ahead of several nationally ranked teams for another strong finish against a very competitive field of teams.
Iowa Wesleyan finished six strokes behind Grand View and placed ahead of William Woods (3rd), Missouri Valley College (5th) and Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) University (6th). All three are ranked nationally in the NAIA polls.
Wesleyan also furnished the tourney’s individual champion, as Adam Lindsay (Sr.-Aberdeenshire, Scotland) easily out-distanced the field for medalist honors. Lindsay posted a round of three-under par 69 on Tuesday, the best round of the tourney and one of just two rounds in the tourney under par. He finished with a two-day score of 143, five shots ahead of his nearest competitor.
IWC’s Adam Moyers (Jr.-Burlington, Iowa) and Mark Cleary (Fr.-London, England) also posted top 20 finishes individually. Moyers tied for 11th with a two-day total of nine-over 153, while Cleary was one shot behind with a score of 154 that tied for 15th. Emery McGraw (So.-Loveland, Colo.) and Nick Juskewycz (Fr.-Fairfield, Iowa) rounded out the Tigers’ scoring with totals of 165 and 167 to place tied for 43rd and tied for 50th, respectively.
The Wesleyan women also made their season debut in the women’s invitational, placing ninth of 12 teams on hand. The Tigers finished with a two-day score of 866, shooting a 428 on Monday and following up with a 438 on the second day.
Newcomer Melissa Petersen (Fr.-Wilton, Iowa) led IWC with a score of 203 to place 39th individually. Alyssa McClain (Fr.-Belleville, Ill.) was 41st with a 212, Gabby Combs (So.-Macomb, Ill.) placed 44th with a score of 218, and Stevie Schrier (Fr.-Columbus Junction, Iowa) was 51st with a two-day score of 233.
The Wesleyan women are next in action Thursday, April 9th in Marion for a tourney hosted by Mount Mercy College that will use the Stableford scoring system. The Tiger men’s next event will be the NAIA Classic on April 13-14 at the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course in Indianapolis, Ind. The Brickyard course is located on the grounds of the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and the event annually brings together a number of the top programs in the NAIA.
