PELLA – Iowa Wesleyan College freshman Andrew Davis (Macedonia, Ohio) beat a field of 26 competitors in the long jump to lead the IWC men’s and women’s track and field teams at the Central College Invitational on Saturday.
Davis leaped 22 feet, 1 ½ inches (6.74 meters) for the third-best mark in school history and his first individual title in the event this season. The mark also was a personal best and the top performance by a Tiger athlete at the invite.
Davis actually posted IWC’s top two marks at the meet, which was the first of the Tigers’ outdoor season. He also tied for fourth in the high jump, finishing at 6-2 (1.88m) to accumulate both of Wesleyan’s individual top-10 finishes at the meet. The invitational featured more than 20 competing schools including NCAA Division I members Drake University, the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa.
IWC also recorded a top-10 finishing in the men’s 4 x 200 relay, placing ninth. Lonzell Maddock (Sr.-Seattle, Wash.), Mervin Shaw (Sr.-St. Louis, Mo.), Robert Thomas (Fr.-Vienna, Ga.) and Kelvin Brunson (So.-Dooly County, Ga.) ran for the Tigers and finished with a time of 1:34.16.
Other top finishes for Wesleyan came from Maddock in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.75 and Tim Chavez (So.-Champaign, Ill.) with a mark of 12.54m in the shot put. Both finished 15th in their respective events. Kate Krzystofiak (So.-Mount Pleasant, Iowa) posted the top mark for a Tiger female at the event, finishing 25th in the 200 with a time of 31.27 seconds.
While the IWC teams were both at the Central Invitational, Tiger senior Corrie Wagner (Iowa City, Iowa) also competed this weekend at the Washington University Invitational heptathlon in St. Louis. Wagner finished sixth at the meet, compiling a score of 3,488 points. She excelled particularly in the throwing events, winning the shot put with a throw of 39-11 ¼ (12.17m) and finishing second in the javelin with a best of 113-3 (34.53m).
Wesleyan will be back in action next weekend with the Cornell College Invitational next Saturday in Mount Vernon.
