DAVENPORT – The Iowa Wesleyan College men’s golf team was tied for second after the opening day of the St. Ambrose University Invitational, but the Tigers never got a chance to make a run at the leaders as rain cancelled today’s second day of the scheduled two-day tourney at the Emeis Golf Course.
With the tourney shortened to just one round, St. Ambrose won with a score of 287 strokes. IWC tied Grand View College for second with a score of 293, but the Tigers won the tiebreaker for second based on having a higher score for the team’s fifth golfer.
IWC placed three golfers in the top 10 and was led by Adam Lindsay (Sr.-Aberdeenshire, Scotland), who tied for fifth with a round of one-under par 71. Adam Moyers (Jr.-Burlington, Iowa) and Emery McGraw (So.-Loveland, Colo.) also tied for 10th place with matching scores of 73, one shot over par.
Adam Saych (So.-London, England) was next for the Tigers, tying for 29th with a round of 76. Mark Cleary (Fr.-London, England) finished one shot behind with a round of 77. IWC’s Nick Juskewycz (Fr.-Fairfield, Iowa) and Jeff Zieber (So.-Cameron, Mo.) also played as individuals in the tourney. Juskewycz shot a round of 74 on the opening day to tie for 14th individually. Zieber shot a 77 in the first round and was one of the few to get his second round in this morning, carding a 75 before rain cancelled the rest of the day.
The Tigers gained 14 strokes on St. Ambrose from their last tourney. The Fighting Bees defeated IWC by 20 strokes in the opening tournament of the season, but the Tigers’ performance was much better in their second tourney of the season.
“I was a lot happier with how the team played compared to last week,” said Head Coach Ted Peetz. “It would have been nice to try to make a run on Day 2 but Mother Nature had other plans. ‘Scottie’ (Adam Lindsay) is continuing to play solid golf and I am happy the team is starting to make good strides in getting to where we want to be.”
IWC is back on the links this weekend with the Mount Mercy North Country Classic at Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Marion. Play begins on Saturday at noon and continues Sunday at 9 a.m.
