OSKALOOSA – Iowa Wesleyan College held off a second-day charge by Viterbo (Wis.) University to win the William Penn University Statesmen Fall Classic at the Edmundson Golf Course.
IWC finished with a score of 294 on the second day at the par-70 course, totaling 590 over two days to win by six strokes over Viterbo, which rallied to second with a 288 on Wednesday. Marshalltown Community College (607), Grand View College (610) and Simpson College (613) rounded out the top five. It is the second straight year the Tigers have won the Statesmen Fall Classic.
Emery McGraw (So.-Loveland, Colo.) tied with Viterbo’s Mike Hesselman for first place individually. Both shot second day scores of even-par 70, but Hesselman won the tiebreaker to take medalist honors.
The Tigers finished with four golfers in the top 10. McGraw, Adam Lindsay (Sr.-Aberdeenshire, Scotland) and Adam Moyers (Jr.-Burlington, Iowa) finished 2-3-4, with Lindsay firing a 73 on Wednesday for a two-day total of 145 and Moyers finishing the tourney with a 76 for a total of 147. IWC’s Jeff Zieber (So.-Cameron, Mo.) played as an individual and finished with a second round 71 to tie for ninth, his best finish as a collegian.
Adam Saych (So.-London, England) and Mark Cleary (Fr.-London, England) rounded out the team scoring for the Tigers with two-day totals of 155 and 158, respectively. Nick Juskewycz (Fr.-Fairfield, Iowa) also played as an individual for IWC and tied for 26th with a two-day total of 158.
“It was nice to get the victory but I know the guys still could have played better,” said Tiger Head Coach Ted Peetz. “The course was playing a little harder than we have experienced in the past but we were able to get the job done.”
The Tigers return to the course next week with their own IWC Fun City Classic at Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington. First round play begins Monday.
