BURLINGTON – Indian Hills Community College shot a two-day score of 577 to defeat its nearest competition by 22 strokes to win the Iowa Wesleyan College Fun City Classic at the par-72 Spirit Hollow Golf Course.
Indian Hills, the top ranked junior college in the country, had four of the top five individual finishers and defeated a field of 13 teams, including second place Iowa Western Community College. Iowa Wesleyan College finished third in the team competition, rebounding from a first-day 312 to post a team score of 295, which moved the Tigers up two spots in the standings from the first day.
“I was very happy with our effort throughout the tournament,” said IWC Head Coach Ted Peetz. “We had a rough first day and it set us back quite a bit but the guys came in focus to make a move on day two and did. We took a step in the right direction this tournament.”
Kurt Slattery of Indian Hills picked up medalist honors, shooting a two-day score of five-under par 139. IWC’s Mark Cleary (Fr.-London, England) finished second, shooting a tourney-best round of six-under par 66 on Tuesday to back up his first-round 75 and finish three-under par for the tourney.
Cleary’s low round tied for the best in Iowa Wesleyan school history, tying a mark set twice before by teammate Adam Lindsay (Sr.-Aberdeenshire, Scotland). Cleary did not count towards the Tigers’ team score, though, as he was entered into the tournament as an individual.
“It was a bad call by me to play Mark as an individual,” Peetz said in retrospect. “He played lights out especially on day two. A 66 on a course that difficult is really amazing. I’m really excited that Mark is starting to find his groove.”
Lindsay followed Cleary with a one-under par 71 on Tuesday to finish the tourney at four-over par 148. Adam Moyers (Jr.-Burlington, Iowa) finished right behind with a score of 149. Adam Saych (So.-London, England) wound up the tourney with a 154, Emery McGraw (So.-Loveland, Colo.) followed up a first round 84 with a 73 on Tuesday to end up at 157, and Jeff Zieber (So.-Cameron, Mo.) finished at 164. IWC’s second individual golfer, Nick Juskewycz (Fr.-Fairfield, Iowa) finished with a 165.
