ONALASKA, WIS. – Adam Lindsay (Sr.-Aberdeenshire, Scotland) defeated St. Ambrose University’s Dusty Drenth to claim medalist honors as the Iowa Wesleyan College men’s golf team finished third at the Viterbo University Ronnie Eastman Invitational.
The Tigers led the field after the opening day of the tourney at the La Crosse Country Club, but both the host school as well as the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire made a charge on the second day to finish in a tie for first, three strokes ahead of IWC. UW-Eau Claire won the two-hole playoff to take the team championship over Viterbo.
Iowa Wesleyan finished with a two-day score of 610 strokes, following up Sunday’s 301 with a round of 309 on Monday. Eau Claire came from six strokes back on the first day to eventually win, while Viterbo was eight strokes off the lead after Sunday.
The Tigers had their share of notable moments from the tourney, though, starting with Lindsay. The senior shot a pair of rounds at one-over par 73 to tie Drenth for first after 36 holes. Lindsay won the tiebreaker over Drenth and now has five top five finishes in seven events this season.
IWC also accomplished a first in program history by finishing ahead of rival St. Ambrose in a tourney for the first time in school history. The Fighting Bees, long the standard by which Midwest Collegiate Conference schools have been measured by and ranked 15th in the most recent Golf World/Nike NAIA coaches’ poll, finished one stroke behind the Tigers for fourth in the team standings.
The Tigers also had the individual leader after the tourney’s first day. Jeff Zieber (So.-Cameron, Mo.) fired an even-par round of 72 on Sunday and followed it up with a 79 on Monday to tie for eighth individually. However, Zieber was playing as an individual in the tournament, and his score did not count towards IWC’s team score. That good news-bad news scenario was doubly painful because one of the Tigers on the five-man team, Nic Juskewycz (Fr.-Fairfield, Iowa) became ill and had to withdraw shortly after the tourney started.
Adam Saych (So.-London, England) shot back-to-back rounds of 76 to tie for 11th individually. Emery McGraw (So.-Loveland, Colo.) was tied for third after a first round 74 but dropped to an 81 on Monday to tie for 15th. Adam Moyers (Jr.-Burlington, Iowa) finished tied for 22nd with a two-day total of 157.
Next up for IWC is the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament next Monday and Tuesday at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City.
