MARION – Freshman Alyssa McClain (Belleville, Ill.) shot the low round of the day for the Iowa Wesleyan College women’s golf team as the Tigers began their season on Friday at the Mount Mercy College Fall Invitational at Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Marion.
McClain shot a round of 98 in her first collegiate competition, finishing 33rd individually and leading IWC to a finish of eighth place in the 12-team field. The Tigers finished with a team score of 398, while St. Ambrose University won the meet with a score of 334. Simpson College was second with a 357, while Augustana (Ill.) College took third with a score of 361.
The Tigers were consistent, with the top four finishers separated by just three strokes. After McClain’s 98, Ashlee Winner (Sr.-Rushville, Ill.) finished with a 99, Melissa Bruegge (Sr.-Ainsworth, Iowa) scored a 100 and Gabby Combs (So.-Macomb, Ill.) carded a 101. Stevie Schrier (Fr.-Columbus Junction, Iowa) rounded out the scoring for IWC with a 111.
“Out of a field of 72 golfers, there were only ten scores below 90,” said IWC Head Coach Ted Peetz. “Having three of our five girls competing in their first college tournament, I was really impressed with how we played.”
The Tigers have some time off before their next tourney Sept. 12, the Loras Invitational in East Dubuque, Ill.
