PELLA – Jillian Sulcer (Fr.-Mechanicsburg, Ill.) scored the only goal of the match and Cara Arnold (Fr.-Stillman Valley, Ill.) recorded her first collegiate shutout as the Iowa Wesleyan College women’s soccer team defeated Central College 1-0 Wednesday afternoon.
Sulcer’s first career collegiate goal was a big one as she scored unassisted in the 56th minute, and the Tiger defense made it hold up for the team’s second straight win. The win is the first for IWC over the Dutch in four meetings over the past four years, and improves the team to 2-4 this year.
The Tigers scored the lone goal in a match that featured 42 shots, 20 of them on net. IWC took 23 shots and in particular had the upper hand in the second half with a 15-10 advantage in shots. Sulcer, Deandra Franzisi (Jr.-Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario) and Brittney Moss (Fr.-Genoa, Ill.) combined for 16 shots between the three of them.
Central goalkeeper Abigayle Norman made 12 saves in the match, but the Dutch dropped to 1-5 this year. Arnold stopped all seven shots she faced to earn the shutout and her second win of the season.
The Tigers’ will look to stretch their streak to three straight wins on Saturday when the team hosts Coe College at East Lake Park in Mount Pleasant. Match time is 1 pm.
