FOREST CITY – Jessica Ryan (So.-Burlington, Iowa) scored a pair of goals in the first half and tied a school record as the Iowa Wesleyan College women’s soccer team shut out Waldorf College 2-0 in the Midwest Collegiate Conference First Round match Wednesday afternoon.
With the second of her two goals, Ryan tied the school mark for goals in a season with ten. The Tigers improved to 4-13-1 on the season, avenged an earlier loss to the Warriors and advanced to the MCC tourney quarterfinals, where they will face top seeded St. Ambrose University on Saturday.
The Tigers scored both of their goals in the match’s first 20 minutes and less than three minutes apart. Ryan scored both times unassisted, the first time at the 17:15 mark and the second at 19:40 of the first half. The sophomore’s second goal was her 10th of the season, tying the school record originally set by Jaimee Cushman in the 2000 season.
From there, IWC held down the Warriors the rest of the match. The Warriors generated eight shots on goal in the match, but Tiger goalkeeper Cara Arnold (Fr.-Stillman Valley, Ill.) turned away all of them for her second collegiate shutout.
Jillian Sulcer (Fr.-Mechanicsburg, Ill.) led the team with three shots. Eleni Nikols (Fr.-Elmwood Park, Ill.) and Brittney Moss (Fr.-Genoa, Ill.) both shot twice, and Ryan scored on both of her shots. She was injured on her second goal, though, and did not play the rest of the match.
The win gave IWC some revenge after a 1-0 loss to Waldorf in Mount Pleasant in the regular season on Oct. 4. The Warriors finish their season 5-12 overall.
The Tigers now will face St. Ambrose on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Davenport at the Davenport Soccer Complex. The Queen Bees defeated IWC 5-0 in a matchup five days ago in the Tigers’ regular season finale.
