Tigers stopped by Queen Bees in MCC women’s soccer quarterfinals

DAVENPORT – The Iowa Wesleyan College women’s soccer team saw its season end Saturday with a 6-0 loss to St. Ambrose University in the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament quarterfinals.

The Queen Bees defeated the Tigers for the second time in a week and knocked IWC out of the conference tourney, ending Wesleyan’s season at 4-14-1 overall. St. Ambrose, the top seed in the tourney, advances to the semifinals to face #4 seed Clarke College next Saturday in Davenport.

Any hopes IWC had of upsetting the Queen Bees (8-8-2 overall) were given an early blow when Kate Gardner scored for Ambrose five minutes into the match to give SAU the lead. The Tigers settled down and held the hosts at bay for almost the rest of the half, but in the 37th minute Brittany Ward scored to make it 2-0, a lead St. Ambrose took into halftime.

The Queen Bees put the match away in the second half with four more goals. Gardner scored her second in the 50th minute, and Nikki Boland scored twice as well in the second half.

SAU outshot the Tigers 25-6. Aimee Kowalski (Sr.-Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan) had four of the Tigers’ six shots, while Taylor Scott (Fr.-Rockton, Ill.) and Eleni Nikols (Fr.-Elmwood Park, Ill.) had one shot each. Cara Arnold (Fr.-Stillman Valley, Ill.) had eight saves in goal for IWC.

The Tigers played without Jessica Ryan (So.-Burlington, Iowa), who tied a school record for goals in a season but was injured in the first round win over Waldorf on Wednesday. The match was also the final one for six IWC seniors.
