DES MOINES – The Midwest Collegiate Conference released its postseason volleyball honors on Wednesday, and a pair of Iowa Wesleyan College sophomores received honorable mention honors.
Middle hitter B.J. Wagy (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and setter Kendra Zimmerman (Green Bay, Wis.) both were named Honorable Mention All-Midwest Collegiate Conference for the 2008 season. The two were a part of a group of 26 players total who were honored by the conference for either first team or honorable mention recognition.
Wagy received honorable mention all-conference honors for the second straight season despite playing much of the year with a nagging injury. She finished the year with 143 kills, finishing fifth on the team in that category, and led the Tigers and ranked among the MCC leaders with 84 blocks, including 40 solo blocks.
Zimmerman joined the Tigers this year as a transfer from St. Norbert (Wis.) College and finished with 862 assists, placing sixth in the MCC in that category. She was statistically IWC’s best all-around performer, also leading the team with 35 service aces and finishing third on the team in digs (510) and blocks (36). Zimmerman also added 96 kills and was in the running for league Newcomer of the Year honors, which went to Amy Braaksma of Viterbo (Wis.) University.
Sheila Mercado of William Penn University was named the MCC Player of the Year. Heather Harelstad of Viterbo was Libero of the Year, while Jeremy Wise of William Penn was Coach of the Year.
Wagy and Zimmerman were part of an IWC team that finished 12-19 overall this year and placed eighth in the MCC. The Tigers lose five seniors from this year’s team but expect to return nine players for the 2009 season.
