DES MOINES – Top-seeded Grand View College defeated Iowa Wesleyan College 6-1 in the Midwest Collegiate Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament quarterfinals on Sunday, ending the Tigers’ season.
The Tigers, seeded ninth in the tourney, got a goal from Rob Atkinson (So.-Northants, England) but were outshot 25-7 by the Vikings and finished the season with a 4-16 record. Grand View (12-5-1) advanced to an MCC semifinal match against fourth seed Ashford University next Sunday.
IWC scored its only goal in the first half with Atkinson finding the back of the net with an assist by Scott Black (Fr.-Airdrie, Scotland). Grand View scored three times in the first half, though, and added three more goals in the second half to finish the match.
Troy Osborne (Fr.-Sydney, Australia) had seven saves in goal for the Tigers. The match was the final one for IWC seniors Arle Calderon (Lima, Peru), Shaun Mueller (Stillman Valley, Ill.) and Chris Rennie (Edinburgh, Scotland).
Lyall Menzies scored three goals for GVC, which defeated Iowa Wesleyan for the second time this season. The Vikings also defeated the Tigers 4-1 in Mount Pleasant on Oct. 7.
