FOREST CITY – Ninth-seeded Iowa Wesleyan College outshot Waldorf College 29-3 and got a flurry of activity from its bench in defeating the Warriors 4-0 in the Midwest Collegiate Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament First Round Thursday afternoon.
All four IWC goals came from players coming off the bench as the Tigers kept their season going and advanced to an MCC tourney quarterfinal matchup against top seeded Grand View College on Sunday. Wesleyan also avenged a 6-1 loss to Waldorf earlier in the season in improving to 4-15 overall and ending the Warriors’ season at 4-13-1.
The Tigers peppered the Warriors goal almost from the start and scored once in the first half before tallying three times in the second half. Chris Rennie (Sr.-Edinburgh, Scotland) had a pair of goals while Rob Atkinson (So.-Northants, England) added a goal and two assists in IWC’s surprisingly dominant win over a team that handled the Tigers in their matchup in Mount Pleasant on Oct. 4.
Rennie scored the Tigers’ opening goal, heading in a ball from Atkinson in the 28th minute for a 1-0 lead. The lead would remain that way until the 50th minute when Scott Black (Fr.-Airdrie, Scotland) scored an unassisted goal for his second straight match with a goal and a 2-0 lead for Wesleyan.
IWC added onto its lead at the 70:41 mark when Atkinson scored unassisted past Waldorf goalkeeper Ryan Martin to make it 3-0. Rennie concluded the scoring by adding his second goal of the day and his fourth of the season since moving to the midfield, scoring just over six minutes later again with an assist from Atkinson.
Troy Osborne (Fr.-Sydney, Australia) had to make just one save to pick up his second collegiate shutout. IWC piled up an 18-2 advantage in shots in the second half, with Tiger substitutes posting 18 of the team’s 29 shots in the match.
The win was the second in two days in MCC tourney first round matches against Waldorf, as the Tiger women’s soccer team defeated Waldorf in Forest City on Wednesday afternoon. The men now travel to Des Moines to face Grand View on Sunday at 2 p.m. Iowa Wesleyan will be looking for a better result than the teams’ first meeting, a 4-1 GVC win on Oct. 7 in Mount Pleasant.
