Blueboys hold off Tiger men, 2-1

JACKSONVILLE, ILL. – Levar Henry (So.-St. Johns, Antigua) scored a goal to cut an early two-goal deficit in half, but the Iowa Wesleyan College men’s soccer team got no closer in a 2-1 non-conference loss to Illinois College Tuesday afternoon.

The Tigers were unable to score in the final 72 minutes and dropped to 1-5 on the season. The Blueboys defeated IWC for the second straight year and improved to 2-4 overall.

Henry scored in the 18th minute, but by then the Tigers were already trailing 2-0 after Illinois College had struck twice very early in the match. Cameron Stuart scored just 3:39 into the match for the opener and Matt Oller added a second goal in the 12th minute to make it 2-0.

IWC got its unassisted goal from Henry at the 17:49 mark. The Tigers would not score again, though, putting five more shots on goal but being shut down by Blueboy goalkeeper Tallis Ingram.

Chris Rennie (Sr.-Edinburgh, Scotland) started for the Tigers before Troy Osborne (Fr.-Sydney, Australia) came on to finish the match, making five saves in the final 70 minutes. Illinois College outshot IWC 19-12 for the match and put 10 shots on net to six for the Tigers. Alberto de Mesa (Jr.-Malaga, Spain) led Wesleyan with three shots.

The Tigers return to play Saturday against Coe College. The match will be the second of a doubleheader at East Lake Park in Mount Pleasant, with the IWC and Coe women’s teams facing off at 1 p.m. with the men’s match to follow.
