MOUNT PLEASANT – The Iowa Wesleyan College football program recently concluded its third summer hosting a summer 7-on-7 football camp for area high school teams.
Teams representing ten high schools entered the camp, which took place on consecutive Sundays July 13, 20 and 27 and concluded with a tournament on the last day. Mediapolis defeated Mount Pleasant 18-10 in the championship game of the tournament.
Other teams competing in the camp included Burlington, Danville, Eldon Cardinal, Fairfield, Highland, Louisa-Muscatine, Muscatine and West Burlington/Notre Dame. The ten teams participating were the most in the camp’s three years being conducted, and in all more than 200 players participated in the camp.
“This is the biggest showing we’ve ever had for the camp,” said IWC Head Coach Jason Smelser. “It was a big jump, and it’s a huge way for us to recruit, to get a look at players and also to build relationships with players, head coaches and assistant coaches in the area.”
The camp was coordinated by former IWC assistant coach Mark Spencer and current Tigers assistant Peter Jennings. Current IWC players also assisted with coaching duties. Teams played three games a day in the first two weeks of the camp before the double-elimination tournament on the final day.
