MARION – The Iowa Wesleyan College women’s golf squad played in a unique event on Thursday and finished fourth of five teams at the Mount Mercy College Stableford Classic held at Hunter’s Ridge Golf Course.
The Tigers competed in a tourney using the Stableford scoring system, in which teams receive points based on their performance at each hole and aim for the highest score possible. IWC posted a score of 51 points, finishing being Waldorf College (90 points), Ashford University (81) and Mount Mercy (70). The Waldorf junior varsity finished fifth with 31 points.
Stroke-wise, IWC finished with a score of 410 strokes and was led by Melissa Petersen (Fr.-Wilton, Iowa), who paced the team with a round of 95, good for 12th individually. Her 47 on the front nine was also the team’s best nine-hole score.
Ashlee Winner (Sr.-Rushville, Ill.) finished tied for 18th individually with a round of 103 before going to participate in the IWC softball games against Purdue University North Central (Ind.) later in the day, where she later would earn a save while pitching in the second game of a doubleheader. Melissa Bruegge (Sr.-Ainsworth, Iowa) also added a third top 20 finish for the Tigers, carding a 104 to place 20th individually in her spring debut.
Gabby Combs (So.-Macomb, Ill.) finished 22nd for Wesleyan with a round of 108. Alyssa McClain (Fr.-Belleville, Ill.) was 24th with a score of 113, while Stevie Schrier (Fr.-Columbus Junction, Iowa) placed 25th by shooting a 114.
