DES MOINES – A pair of Iowa Wesleyan College baseball players have been honored by the Midwest Collegiate Conference with Player of the Week honors, as announced today by the MCC.
IWC outfielder Jared Zueck (Jr.-Williamsville, Ill.) was named the MCC baseball Player of the Week today, while Milton Gonzalez (Jr.-Canovanas, Puerto Rico) was named the conference’s Pitcher of the Week. The two are the first Wesleyan baseball players to receive the honors this year.
Zueck received the conference’s honor for position players after reaching base in eight of his 10 plate appearances last week in a pair of IWC wins. Batting in the leadoff spot, he had five hits in seven official at bats and also was hit by pitch three times.
Zueck was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and was twice hit by pitches in the Tigers’ 6-4 win at Mount Mercy College last Tuesday. He then went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored in Wesleyan’s 17-1 win at St. Ambrose University.
For the season Zueck is batting .351 in 32 games for the Tigers. He has four home runs and 18 RBIs and is tied for the team lead in runs scored with 31. Zueck also leads the MCC in times being hit by pitch with 13 this season.
Gonzalez received his award after a dominating performance against St. Ambrose in which he struck out 11 batters and allowed only four hits in a complete game seven-inning victory. He allowed only a single unearned run and improved his record to 4-3 this season.
Gonzalez has struck out 47 batters in 47 2/3 innings this year and holds a 3.97 earned run average. He has thrown complete games in six of his eight starts and in six games has allowed three earned runs or fewer.
The Tigers currently hold a 24-15 overall record and at 9-5 in the MCC are third in the league standings. IWC gets back into action Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader against Clarke College starting at 4 p.m.
