Owens honored as MSFA Midwest Defensive Player of the Week

FINDLAY, OHIO – Iowa Wesleyan College linebacker Chris Owens (So.-Greer, S.C.) was named the Mid-States Football Association Midwest League Defensive Player of the Week, as announced today by conference sports information director Larry Alter.

Owens had his best game as a Tiger on Saturday in IWC’s 21-20 loss to Peru State (Neb.) College. Owens came off the bench and split time at linebacker but led the team with 10 tackles, six solo. He also had 4 ½ tackles for loss for a total of 15 yards, including one sack for eight yards.

Owens is the second IWC player to receive MSFA player of the week honors this season. Quarterback Bryan Abihider (Sr.-Hemet, Calif.) was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week after his performance in the Tigers’ 41-0 win over Waldorf College in their season opener. It is also the first time since 2005 that IWC has received one of the league’s weekly awards more than once in a season.

For the season Owens is tied with teammate Quentin Lang (Sr.-Bellwood, Ill.) for the team lead in tackles with 18. His six tackles for loss leads the team and ranks him third in the MSFA Midwest and ties for seventh nationally in the National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

IWC returns to the field Saturday for the second game of a three-game homestand. The Tigers will host Grand View College in a rare night game at home, with kickoff at Evans Field at the Mapleleaf Community Complex set for 6 p.m.
