SPEEDWAY, IND. – Iowa Wesleyan College’s men’s golf team received a terrific opportunity to face a number of the best NAIA men’s golf programs in the country at a historic location and finished 15th at the NAIA Brickyard Classic played Monday and Tuesday at the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course.
The Tigers played the Brickyard course that is located on the grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and finished at the back of a pack of teams that included programs all ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA polls. The ultra-competitive tourney was won by Berry (Ga.) College and featured 11 teams separated by a total of nine strokes and the entire field separated by just 27 strokes.
IWC finished with a two-day score of 612, posting a 305 on Monday and a 307 on Tuesday. The Tigers were tied for 13th after day one but slipped on the second day.
Senior Adam Lindsay (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) and freshman Mark Cleary (London, England) were the brightest spots for Wesleyan. Lindsay posted his third straight top-10 finish of the spring, tying for ninth with a two-over par 146. Cleary posted his best two-day score of the spring with a 150 that tied for 25th individually.
Junior Adam Moyers (Burlington, Iowa) tied for 70th with a score of 161, shooting an 83 on the first day before following up with a 78. Emery McGraw (So.-Loveland, Colo.) and Jeff Zieber (So.-Cameron, Mo.) finished with scores of 164 and 167, respectively, finishing 74th and 75th in the field.
The Brickyard Classic is hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University and is played at the Brickyard Crossing course which is located just outside the racetrack that annually hosts the Indianapolis 500. The course crosses over onto the infield of the racetrack, with four of the course’s holes located inside the 2 1/2-mile racetrack.
Of Midwest Collegiate Conference schools participating, Grand View University posted the best finish, placing 12th with a score of 604. St. Ambrose University tied for 13th at 605 and furnished the tourney medalist in Dusty Drenth with a four-under par 140.
The Tigers now get ready for the final two rounds of the MCC Championships, to be held April 18-19 and hosted by William Penn University at the Oskaloosa Golf Course. IWC enters the second half of the championship in fourth place, 27 strokes off the lead.
