Tigers open season going 3-1 at Illinois College Invite over weekend

      JACKSONVILLE, ILL. – The Iowa Wesleyan College volleyball team opened the season with an encouraging performance in the Illinois College Invitational this past weekend, winning three of four matches.

        The Tigers disposed of Eureka (Ill.) College by scores of 25-18, 29-27 and 25-19 in their opening match. IWC also easily defeated Rose-Hulman (Ind.) Institute of Technology (25-21, 25-12, 25-23) and Westminster (Mo.) College (25-14, 25-21, 25-16) in three games each on Sunday.

        The Tigers did see their winning streak in the tourney end with a four-game loss to the University of Dubuque in their second match on Saturday. IWC had won nine straight in the invite over the past three years before losing a hard-fought match to the Spartans, 25-23, 19-25, 25-18, 25-23.

        Katie Jammer (So.-Green Bay, Wis.) led the Tigers with 29 kills on the weekend, one of four Tigers with 20-plus kills in the tourney. Setter Kendra Zimmerman (So.-Green Bay, Wis.) had 129 assists over four matches and also led the team with 62 digs. Corrie Wagner (Sr.-Iowa City, Iowa) and Katie Leidl (Jr.-Esterhazy, Saskatchewan) added 59 digs apiece, and Bonnie Hahn (Sr.-Iowa City, Iowa) led the team with 11 blocks.

        IWC will again take to the road this weekend to play in the Grinnell Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Tigers open play in Grinnell against Midwest Collegiate Conference rival William Penn University at 6 pm Friday night.
