GRINNELL – Iowa Wesleyan College volleyball was beaten by one nemesis but finally found its way past another on its way to winning three of four matches at the Grinnell Invitational this weekend.
The Tigers started the tournament with an ugly loss Friday to Midwest Collegiate Conference rival William Penn before rebounding to win their last three matches. IWC also finished the tourney with a four-game win (25-23, 25-17, 12-25, 25-23) over the University of Dubuque, a team which has beaten the Tigers three times over the past two years and won a duel between the two teams just seven days earlier.
IWC also picked up a pair of three-game wins, including a win Friday night against tournament hosts Grinnell College (25-20, 25-17, 25-22) and a victory Saturday morning against Rockford (Ill.) College (25-14, 25-9, 25-22).
Corrie Wagner (Sr.-Iowa City, Iowa), Katie Leidl (Jr.-Esterhazy, Saskatchewan) and Kendra Zimmerman (So.-Green Bay, Wis.) were all named to the all-tournament team. Leidl led IWC with 29 kills and 50 digs in the tourney, Wagner added 48 digs, and Zimmerman had 112 assists. Megan McVey (Fr.-Fort Worth, Texas) also had 26 kills, 14 blocks and a team-high eight service aces over the two days.
The Tigers are now 6-2 overall with their next match being their home opener Wednesday night against Clarke College. The match at 7 pm at Ruble Arena will also be the team’s Midwest Collegiate Conference opener for the season.
