WHITEWATER, WIS. – The Iowa Wesleyan College volleyball team faced a pair of highly ranked teams on its way to finishing 1-3 at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational this past weekend.
The Tigers lost to the host Warhawks as well as Augustana (Ill.) College on Friday, both in three sets. IWC also lost to Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Saturday in three sets and also dropped the first two sets against Aurora (Ill.) University before coming back to win the final three sets and defeat the Spartans in five.
Both Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Wisconsin-Whitewater are ranked in the top 15 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) NCAA Division III coaches poll. Oshkosh is ranked ninth and was undefeated before losing to Augustana on Saturday, while Whitewater, coached by former IWC player and head coach Stacy Boudreau, is ranked 11th.
The Tigers hung tough with both of their opponents on Friday, losing the first sets in both cases by 25-23 scores. IWC struggled against Wisconsin-Oshkosh and lost two close games to Aurora to start out. After losing the first two against the Spartans by 25-23 scores, Wesleyan came back to own the final three sets by scores of 25-10, 25-19 and 15-6.
Libero Corrie Wagner (Sr.-Iowa City, Iowa) had a busy weekend, leading the team with 79 digs and receiving nearly half of the team’s serves. Megan McVey (Fr.-Fort Worth, Texas) led the team with 29 kills on the weekend, Kendra Zimmerman (So.-Green Bay, Wis.) had 84 assists, and B.J. Wagy (So.-Cedar Rapids, Iowa) led the team with 10 blocks, eight solo.
The Tigers return to action Thursday for a non-conference match against William Woods University in Fulton, Mo. at 7 p.m.
