Tigers receive some help from Garrison to finish MCC tourney

ONALASKA, WIS. – Piecing together a four-player lineup that included an emergency substitute, the Iowa Wesleyan College women’s golf team finished ninth at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament which concluded Monday at the La Crosse Country Club.

A bizarre weekend for the Tigers and the rest of the conference came to a close with IWC finishing with a score of 458 on Monday to finish the tourney with a score of 1499 strokes. St. Ambrose University won the tourney with a score of 1156, easily ahead of second place Waldorf College (1210) and the rest of the field.

The Tigers very nearly were unable to compete in the final two rounds of the conference championship event and had to scramble just to find a fourth player for the tourney. The team was down to three players on Friday when sophomore Gabby Combs (Macomb, Ill.) broke her foot and wasn’t able to secure a fourth player until late Saturday. Kelli Garrison (Sr.-Johnson, Kan.), a member of the IWC women’s soccer and women’s basketball teams this year, agreed to play for the team for the conference tourney and made her collegiate golf debut this weekend.

The tourney was also plagued by ugly spring weather that reduced Sunday’s third round to just nine holes. Wesleyan and several of the other teams to go out first completed their entire rounds, but threatening weather moved in as the leaders were ready to take to the back nine and the round was shortened.

The teams played the entire 18 holes for the final round, and Melissa Petersen (Fr.-Wilton, Iowa) again paced the team with a score of 98 that tied for 25th on the day. Alyssa McClain (Fr.-Belleville, Ill.) was next with a score of 115, while Garrison finished right behind her with a 116 on Monday, showing marked improvement after shooting an 81 in nine holes on Sunday. Stevie Schrier (Fr.-Columbus Junction, Iowa) rounded out the team’s scoring with a score of 126.

McClain led the team on Sunday with a score of 53, two strokes ahead of Petersen. The conference tourney was the final event of the season for the Tigers.
