MOUNT PLEASANT – Iowa Wesleyan College has released its 2009 cross country schedule as the school gets ready for the program’s return this fall after a 10-year hiatus.
The Tiger men’s and women’s cross country teams are scheduled to participate in six meets plus the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships to be held Nov. 7 at a location to be announced. The team also will have the opportunity to qualify for the NAIA National Championships, which will be held in Vancouver, Wash.
Highlighting the schedule will be the Tigers own home invitational, to be held Saturday, Oct. 10 at 10 a.m. The IWC Invitational is planned to be held at East Lake Park, which is also the home of the Tiger soccer teams as well as the IWC softball program’s Betty Sammons Classic.
Wesleyan will also participate in the 48th annual Les Duke Invitational, a long-running tradition hosted every year by Grinnell College. IWC will also participate in meets hosted in Iowa by Central College, Grand View University and Graceland University, and will travel to Chicago on Sept. 26 for the Lakefront Invitational hosted by Loyola (Ill.) University.
Cross country is returning at Iowa Wesleyan ten years after being phased out as a varsity sport. The sport was dropped in April 2000 due to low student-athlete involvement but was re-introduced in January of 2008. The teams will be coached by Anne Dreyer, also the head coach of the IWC men’s and women’s track and field teams.
