MOUNT PLEASANT – Waldorf College got the better of a pitcher’s duel in the opener and went on to sweep a Midwest Collegiate Conference doubleheader from Iowa Wesleyan College Wednesday afternoon at the Mapleleaf Community Athletic Complex.
The Warriors defeated the Tigers 2-0 in the first game as Chelsea Dougherty out-dueled Ashlee Winner (Sr.-Rushville, Ill.) in a game dominated by both hurlers. Waldorf then heated up the bats in the second game and went on to win the nightcap 9-4.
The Tigers (17-23 overall, 9-11 MCC) posted just two hits in the first game of the doubleheader, which was picked up in the second inning as a suspended game from Saturday before rains postponed play for the rest of the afternoon. Wesleyan came close to scoring in the second and sixth innings, both times getting runners to third base before stranding them.
Waldorf scored the game’s lone runs, the first run coming on an error in the third inning and the second scoring on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. On the mound Dougherty allowed just two hits while striking out four, while Winner allowed four hits and just one earned run in pitching a complete game.
The senior pitched again in the second game and was staked to an early 2-1 lead after IWC scored twice in the bottom of the first inning on RBI singles by Jerri Fuentez (Sr.-Houston, Texas) and Sarah Weber (Jr.-Danville, Iowa). The Warriors tied the game with a run in the third and then took control in the late innings. Waldorf scored three times in the fifth inning to take the lead and then added four runs in the seventh to put it away.
Fuentez had three hits and three RBIs in the second game to lead the Tigers. Haleigh Hempen (Jr.-Hamilton, Iowa) added a pair of hits on the night.
The Tigers continue a busy stretch of games with a doubleheader Thursday at St. Ambrose University in Davenport. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
