DAVENPORT – St. Ambrose University hammered out 20 hits in two games to sweep a doubleheader from Iowa Wesleyan College Thursday afternoon.
The Queen Bees won by scores of 10-0 and 8-4, extending the Tigers’ losing streak to five games. St. Ambrose also moved ahead of IWC in the Midwest Collegiate Conference standings and completed a four-game sweep of this season’s series between the teams.
St. Ambrose dominated the first game, scoring at least twice in each of the first four innings and winning the game in five innings. Caitlyn Polzin led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run and the Queen Bees never looked back.
Wesleyan posted just three hits in the opener, two coming from Hannah Milligan (Fr.-West Burlington, Iowa), who batted in the lead-off spot for the first time this season. Milligan would post two more hits in the second game and drove in a pair of runs as IWC came out strong in the nightcap, moving out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning.
Jerri Fuentez (Sr.-Houston, Texas) added a pair of doubles and also drove in a run, but the Bees came back in the later innings. SAU had eight of its 10 hits in the last three innings, scoring four times in the fourth and three more times in the sixth.
IWC is back in action again on Friday at Grand View University in Des Moines. Game time is set for 1 p.m. The Tigers will then be home this weekend to wrap up the regular season with a pair of doubleheaders against Viterbo (Wis.) University, with the first twinbill starting at 5 p.m. Saturday.
