Softball, baseball get in most of Saturday action before heavy rains come in

Despite ominous forecasts, the Iowa Wesleyan College softball and baseball teams got in most of their games Saturday evening against Viterbo (Wis.) University before heavy weather moved into the Mount Pleasant area.

The Tigers softball team split a pair of games against the V-Hawks, losing the first game 3-1 before coming back for an 11-3 win in six innings. On the night in which seven outgoing seniors were honored, Jerri Fuentez (Sr.-Houston, Texas) had three hits and Hilarie Droz (Sr.-Ottumwa, Iowa) drove in three runs as part of a 12-hit attack in a six-inning win in the second game.

The IWC baseball team also picked up a key 5-4 extra innings win over Viterbo in the first game of a doubleheader when Nelcicio York (Jr.-St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles) hit a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth. The Tigers were also ahead of the V-Hawks 3-0 in the third inning of the second game of the twinbill when lightning forced the suspension of the game. Heavy rains eventually came in and resulted in the postponement of the game, as Midwest Collegiate Conference rules do not allow the completion of suspended games that have not gone five innings.

A complete recap of Saturday's games will be posted Sunday.
