DUBUQUE – Corrie Wagner (Sr.-Iowa City, Iowa) posted two top-three finishes and was named Midwest Collegiate Conference champion in the heptathlon event, leading the Iowa Wesleyan College track and field teams at the MCC Outdoor Championships held Thursday and Friday on the campus of the University of Dubuque.
Wagner placed second in the shot put and third in the javelin for the best two finishes by a member of the Tiger women’s team. She also was named conference champion in the heptathlon based on her performances during the outdoor season, when she posted the top mark in the conference in the event.
Wagner’s heptathlon title is the fourth conference title of her career and comes after winning the MCC title in the pentathlon in the indoor season. She also won the conference title in the shot put last year in both the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Her mark of 38 feet even in the shot put on Friday was second behind Mandy Streu of St. Ambrose, who set a new meet record of 42-5 ½, nearly two feet past the original mark. She also was third in the javelin with a high mark of 116-10, finishing behind Laura Schiltz of Grand View University (128-2) and Katie Burnett of William Penn University (125-1).
The IWC men’s team was led by freshman Andrew Davis (Macedonia, Ohio), whose two days at the conference meet were nearly as good as Wagner’s. Davis grabbed third in both the long jump and triple jump events, the best marks for the Tiger men’s team.
Davis was third in the long jump on Thursday with a mark of 21-4 ¾, placing behind Royce Clay of William Penn (22-3 ½) and Caleb Snyder of Ashford University (21-11 ½). He also took third in the high jump on Friday, topping out at 6-3 ¼ and placing behind Russel ReVoir of Clarke College (6-5) and Austin Smith of Ashford (6-3 ¼).
Jason Amy (Jr.-Lake Elsinore, Calif.) and Tim Chavez (So.-Champaign, Ill.) also qualified for the finals in the 200 and the discus throw, respectively. Amy was seventh in the 200 with a time of season-best time of 23.11, while Chavez posted a top mark of 107-11 in finishing ninth in the shot put.
