KANSAS CITY, MO. – Three Iowa Wesleyan College athletic teams were named recipients of the NAIA Scholar Team award for the 2008-09 school year, it was announced Friday by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Receiving the award were the IWC women’s indoor and outdoor track & field teams as well as the Tiger men’s basketball team. The teams were three of the record total of more than 800 teams to receive the award.
Wesleyan’s men’s basketball program posted a team grade point average of 3.10 for the 2008-09 school year. The Tiger women’s track & field teams both posted a team GPA of 3.02 in 2008-09.
For a team to be considered for the NAIA Scholar Team award, they must have a 3.0 minimum GPA (on a 4.0 scale) as defined by the institution. The team grade point average must include all varsity athletes certified as eligible. This year’s total of 837 teams receiving the award represented a 12% increase over last year, and more than 15% of the schools receiving the award had a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
