FINDLAY, OHIO – Iowa Wesleyan College has been picked to finish sixth in the Mid-States Football Association Midwest League this season, according to the 2009 preseason coaches’ poll released by the MSFA on Friday.
The Tigers received 28 points in the poll of league coaches, putting them ahead of Grand View University (21 points) and Waldorf College (8 points). IWC also received one of the eight first-place votes in the poll and was one of just three teams to receive a first-place vote.
St. Ambrose University, the three-time defending MSFA Midwest champion, has been picked to again win the league, as SAU received 62 points and six first-place votes in the poll. McKendree (Ill.) University is second in the poll with 53 points as well as the other first-place vote.
William Penn University placed third in the poll with 48 points. Quincy (Ill.) University and the University of St. Francis (Ill.) tied for fourth in the poll with 34 points apiece.
The Tigers finished seventh in the MSFA Midwest last season, defeating Trinity International (Ill.) University for their lone league win. IWC finished 1-6 in the MSFA Midwest last year and 3-8 overall.
Grand View and Waldorf will be in their first year of competition in the MSFA. With their addition to the Midwest, longtime Midwest League entrants Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) University and Trinity International have moved to the MSFA Mideast.
IWC opens the 2009 season at home game Aug. 29 against Trinity International at 6 p.m. at Evans Field at the Mapleleaf Athletic Complex. The Tigers open MSFA Midwest play Sept. 19 at home against McKendree.
