DAVENPORT – The Iowa Wesleyan College women’s golf team opened its 2009-10 season by finishing seventh of seven teams at the Augustana College Quadrangular held at Emeis Golf Course on Saturday.
The Tigers finished with a team score of 424 strokes on the par-72 course. All four IWC golfers improved their scores measurably on the back nine, though, finishing the day on a very competitive note against a field featuring several Midwest Collegiate Conference schools as well as regional foes Augustana and Monmouth (Ill.) College.
Melissa Petersen (Sr.-Wilton, Iowa) paced Wesleyan with a round of 95, tying for 18th in the field of nearly 50 golfers. Petersen also tied for the 10th best score of any individual on the back nine with a 45 on the last nine holes.
Gabby Combs (Jr.-Macomb, Ill.) was next for IWC and tied for 31st with a score of 101. Alyssa McClain (So.-Belleville, Ill.) tied for 39th with a score of 110 while Stevie Schrier (So.-Columbus Junction, Iowa) was 45th with a score of 118 but cut 20 strokes off her front nine total, finishing with a 49 after a score of 69 on the first nine holes.
St. Ambrose University held off Viterbo (Wis.) University for the team title, as the Queen Bees’ score of 339 outlasted the V-Hawks with 343. Victoria Bown of St. Ambrose was medalist with a round of 80.
The Augustana Quad was the first match for the Tigers under new Head Coach Kim Jennings. The 2009 IWC women’s golf team consists of four players for the fall portion of the season. All four players are returnees from last year, and Petersen was named Honorable Mention All-MCC last year.
Wesleyan will be back in action in two weeks when it plays in the Wartburg Invitational. The two-day tourney begins Saturday, Sept. 12 at 8 a.m. the Centennial Oaks Golf Course in Waverly.
