MOUNT PLEASANT – Jillian Sulcer (So.-Mechanicsburg, Ill.) scored in the 99th minute and the Iowa Wesleyan College women’s soccer team picked up its first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Culver-Stockton (Mo.) College Tuesday afternoon at East Lake Park.
Sulcer received a pass from Taylor Scott (So.-Rockton, Ill.) and popped the ball up in the air and over Culver-Stockton goalkeeper Dakota Jorgensen with 1:03 left in the first overtime period, allowing the Tigers to survive in a game they dominated statistically. IWC improved to 1-1-1 on the season and also defeated CSC for the second straight year.
The Tigers outshot the Wildcats 21-7 in the match and held the ball in their offensive end for the majority of the afternoon. Wesleyan was unable to capitalize on any opportunities, though, until Bree Culp (So.-Springfield, Ill.) scored an unassisted goal in the 47th minute to make it 1-0.
IWC seemed in control in the second half but couldn’t extend the lead, and the Tigers eventually paid for it when Jacqueline Kaufman took the ball into the center of the field and passed to Andria Carroll, who slipped a shot past goalkeeper Cara Arnold (So.-Davis Junction, Ill.) in the 79th minute.
The Tigers went to overtime for the second time in three days and looked to be headed to a second overtime when Scott found Sulcer with a pass late in the period. Sulcer scored and posted the third game-winning goal of her career at IWC.
Arnold finished with four saves in the match for her fifth career win. Sulcer led the team with six shots, two on goal, while Deandra Franzisi (Sr.-Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario) took four shots off the bench and Kelsey Centner (Jr.-Casa Grande, Ariz.) was active at a forward spot and finished with three shots.
Iowa Wesleyan will go for its second straight win on Saturday when it hosts St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) College at 10 a.m. at East Lake Park.
