MOUNT PLEASANT – Culver-Stockton (Mo.) College’s Pablo Diez Burrillo scored the winning goal midway through the second overtime period and the Iowa Wesleyan College men’s soccer team dropped a painful 2-1 loss to the Wildcats Tuesday evening at East Lake Park.
Diez Burrillo scored when his free kick from far outside the goalkeeper’s box was deflected by an IWC defender and rolled past goalkeeper Troy Osborne (So.-Sydney, Australia), giving the Wildcats the win in the 106th minute of play. Culver-Stockton won its opening match of the season, while the Tigers fell to 0-3 on the season
The teams spent almost the entire match even on the scoreboard, though IWC dominated the shooting categories. The Tigers outshot the Wildcats 20-9 and put nine shots on goal to five for the visitors
It was Culver-Stockton who scored first, though, as the Wildcats tallied just before halftime when Bryan Curry received a nice pass from Conner Halpin and scored to make it 1-0 in the 43rd minute. The Tigers answered soon after halftime, though, as Michael Roberts (Sr.-St. John’s, Antigua) scored his second goal of the season off a pass from Alex Marchese (So.-Toronto, Ontario) to tie the score.
The teams remained tied at the end of regulation and, like the IWC and CSC women’s teams in the match immediately before, went into overtime. Unlike the women’s match, the men remained tied after one overtime period and went to a second overtime, where it appeared the stalemate would continue.
The end came suddenly, as Culver-Stockton received a free kick about 15 yards from midfield after a rather routine Tiger foul during a battle at midfield. Diez Burrillo used the free kick to blast the ball toward the goal, and a Wesleyan defender attempted to clear the ball but instead deflected it toward the goal and away from Osborne, and it rolled into the corner of the net with 4:45 left in the second overtime.
Osborne finished with three saves, while the Wildcats’ Joey Sausto split time in net with Chris Efthim but picked up the win with six saves in more than 60 shutout minutes.
Roberts and Marchese led the Tigers with four shots each. Jake Pilger (Sr.-Burlington, Iowa) and Emil Yazdani (Sr.-Buenos Aires, Argentina) both added three shots each.
IWC will get the rest of the week off and returns to action next Tuesday when it travels to Mount Vernon to face Cornell College. Match time is 4:30 p.m.
