MOUNT PLEASANT – Illinois Institute of Technology scored its lone goal two minutes before halftime and it stood up as the Iowa Wesleyan College women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the Scarlet Hawks on Labor Day at East Lake Park.
Megan Meeke scored in the 43rd minute for Illinois Tech and Iowa Wesleyan was unable to score the tying goal despite several terrific chances in the second half. The Tigers saw their three-match unbeaten streak end and dropped to 2-2-1 this season, while IIT improved to 4-2 and now has won all four meetings all-time between the schools.
The Scarlet Hawks controlled play in the first half with an 8-2 advantage in shots, but couldn’t score until Jessica Roberts found Meeke behind the defense, and Meeke beat IWC goalkeeper Cara Arnold (So.-Davis Junction, Ill.) to make it 1-0.
The Tigers outshot IIT 6-3 in the second half and had a pair of golden chances to score. In the 61st minute, Fanny Koloko-Green (Jr.-Fremont, Calif.) got behind the defense and had Scarlet Hawks goalkeeper Jessica Carlson one-on-one, but her shot went right at Carlson, who made the save. Wesleyan got another chance in the 65th minute when Georgetta Lewis (Sr.-St. John’s, Antigua) had Carlson one-on-one at the end of a long run, but her shot rolled just wide of the left post.
Brittney Moss (So.-Genoa, Ill.) led the Tigers with three shots, while Koloko-Green added two shots, both on goal. Arnold kept IWC close with six saves, while Carlson had five saves for Illinois Tech.
The Tigers will have a day off Tuesday but return to action again Wednesday when they face Cornell College at 4:30 p.m. in Mount Vernon.
