MOUNT VERNON – Brittney Moss (So.-Genoa, Ill.) scored a pair of goals and the Iowa Wesleyan College women’s soccer team came back from a tough loss on Labor Day with a convincing 5-1 road win over Cornell College Wednesday afternoon.
The Tigers got goals from four different players and improved to 3-2-1 overall, with the three wins just one short of the team’s total for all of last season. Cornell lost for the first time in five meetings all-time between the two schools and is now 1-1 this year.
The women’s team also matched the IWC men’s win over Cornell by the same score the night before in Mount Vernon. Just like the men on Tuesday, Wesleyan again scored twice early, took a 2-1 lead into halftime and then scored three times in the second half to put the match away.
The Tigers got on the board in the eighth minute when Kelsey Centner (Jr.-Casa Grande, Ariz.) scored an unassisted goal for her first career goal at IWC. The lead grew to 2-0 at the 23:30 mark when Jillian Sulcer (So.-Mechanicsburg, Ill.) converted a penalty kick for her third goal of the season.
The Rams got back into the match less than a minute later when Jen Swotek scored to make it 2-1 in the 25th minute. The score stayed that way until halftime but not long after that, as Moss scored her first goal just 1:57 into the second half to give Wesleyan a two-goal margin again.
Fanny Koloko-Green (Jr.-Fremont, Calif.) was next for the Tigers, scoring in the 52nd minute off a pass from Taylor Scott (So.-Rockton, Ill.) to make it 4-1. Moss concluded the scoring with her second goal of the match, an unassisted goal coming off a free kick at 63:39.
Cara Arnold (So.-Davis Junction, Ill.) made six saves and got her third win of the season in goal for IWC, which rebounded from a 1-0 loss to Illinois Institute of Technology two days earlier. The Tigers outshot the Rams 13-11 and held an 8-7 edge in shots on goal. Dana Banks and Jenn Barbo combined to make three saves for Cornell, which defeated the Tigers 1-0 in their last meeting last season in Mount Pleasant.
The Tigers are back home on Saturday to face Central Methodist (Mo.) University at 2 p.m. at East Lake Park. The match is the first of a women’s/men’s doubleheader, with the men facing the Eagles at 4 p.m.
