MOUNT PLEASANT – Central Methodist (Mo.) University broke a stalemate with a penalty kick for its first goal, and Iowa Wesleyan College was unable to come back in a 2-0 loss to the Eagles Saturday afternoon at East Lake Park.
The Tigers went scoreless in seven shots on goal and dropped to 1-5 on the season. CMU improved to 2-1 this year and defeated Wesleyan for the second straight season.
The Eagles scored late in the first half after being awarded a penalty kick following a foul against IWC inside the box. Pat McVey converted the kick at the 34:57 mark and Central Methodist went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers put on an offensive push at times in the second half, putting six shots on goal against CMU keeper Corey Schelle. Wesleyan was unable to convert, though, and the Eagles increased the lead to 2-0 in the 78th minute on an unassisted goal by Thyago Catharino.
Central Methodist held a 12-9 advantage in shots, while IWC had a 7-6 advantage in shots on net. Michael Roberts (Sr.-St. John’s, Antigua) led the Tigers with four shots on goal. Goalkeeper Troy Osborne (So.-Sydney, Australia) made three saves for IWC.
Iowa Wesleyan is home again on Tuesday when it faces Rockford (Ill.) College at 4 p.m. at East Lake Park.
