Cleary finishes in top 10 at Mount Mercy Cropper Classic

MARION – Mark Cleary (So.-London, England) shot an excellent opening round score en route to a top 10 finish as the Iowa Wesleyan College men’s golf team took part in a competitive Mount Mercy College Cropper Golf Classic this weekend at Hunters Ridge Golf Course.

The Tigers tied for 15th among 24 teams, finishing with a two-day score of 620 on the par-72 course. IWC dropped from its 11th place standing after Saturday’s first round, and was part of a pack of nine teams in positions 9-17 who were separated by a total of 11 strokes.

Cleary opened the tourney on Saturday with a round of 70, tying for fourth individually on the first day. He followed that up with a round of 75 on Sunday, tying for eighth individually.

Adam Moyers (Sr.-Burlington, Iowa) posted the next best finish for the Tigers, tying for 37th with matching rounds of 76 for a total score of 152. Jeff Zieber (Jr.-Cameron, Mo.) tied for 90th with a score of 161 (79-82), Ryan Gruns (Fr.-Kansas City, Mo.) was right behind with a 162 (81-81) that was good for a tie for 97th, and Emery McGraw (Jr.-Loveland, Colo.) tied for 104th with a score of 165 (83-82).

William Woods (Mo.) University won the team title with a score of 576, four strokes ahead of Illinois Wesleyan University. The Owls also produced the individual champion, as Nick Wilson of William Woods was medalist with a two-day score of 137.

IWC returns to competition next Sunday and Monday with the two-day Clarke College Invitational at Thunder Hills Golf Course in Peosta.
