Local front porch tour celebrates history and hospitality
Area residents are invited to stop and sit a spell, visit with their neighbors and enjoy some refreshments during the 2009 Porches of Mount Pleasant Tour. The tour of front porches at five local homes will be held on Sunday, September 27 from 4 – 7 p.m.
“The theme ‘Celebrating the Heritage of Hospitality in our Community’ reflects the essence of front porches,” said Lynn Ellsworth, Iowa Wesleyan College archivist. “Traditionally the front porch has been a family gathering place, where people relaxed and neighbors stopped to visit.”
This year’s tour will include the homes of Jim and Valerie Willham at 602 E. Monroe St., Mike and Michelle Skubal at 404 E. Monroe St., Doug and Barb Kennedy at 402 E. Monroe St., and the Harlan-Lincoln House at 101 W. Broad St.
A light supper and musical entertainment will be included in the tour.
Tickets are $10 in advance; $12 on the day of the tour. Advance tickets are available at Brown’s Shoe Fit, Jerry’s Restaurant and Peebles, all in Mount Pleasant. Tickets can be purchased at any of the homes on the day of the tour.
The porch tour is sponsored by the Friends of the Harlan-Lincoln House. Proceeds will benefit the continued development of the historic home and museum on the Iowa Wesleyan College campus.
The Friends of the Harlan-Lincoln House is committed to the development of the Harlan-Lincoln House as an educational and cultural resource. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
