GALESBURG, ILL. – Georgetta Lewis (Sr.-St. Johns, Antigua) scored 39 seconds into overtime to give the Iowa Wesleyan College women’s soccer team a come from behind 3-2 win over Knox College Wednesday afternoon.
Lewis scored unassisted for her first goal of the season and the Tigers won their third straight match and improved to 5-1 in their last six matches. IWC also surpassed its win total for all of last season and at 5-2-1 continued the best start in the school’s history.
Wesleyan came back from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 to finally win a match the Tigers dominated most of the way. IWC outshot the Prairie Fire 33-5, but Knox goalkeeper Alex Rauland made 21 saves to keep her team in the match.
Knox (0-5 overall) scored first when Danielle Roeder scored in the sixth minute, but IWC tied it in the 26th minute when Jillian Sulcer (So.-Mechanicsburg, Ill.) scored an unassisted goal to make it 1-1.
The Prairie Fire took the lead again just four minutes later when Arielle Dorman scored to make the score 2-1. The score remained that way into halftime as Rauland made 11 saves in the first half to keep Knox ahead.
Wesleyan tied the match shortly after halftime as Jennie Mitchell (Sr.-LaGrange, Ga.) scored her second goal in as many matches, deflecting in a crossing pass from Lewis to make it 2-2. The score remained that way through the end of regulation as Rauland made 10 more saves in the second half to keep the game tied.
IWC wasted little time in winning the match in overtime. Just half a minute into the first overtime, Lewis received the ball and dribbled past a defender and eventually beat Rauland with a shot for the winner.
The Tigers finished the match with eight different players taking more than one shot, led by Brittney Moss (So.-Genoa, Ill.) taking seven shots, five on goal. Mitchell and Fanny Koloko-Green (Jr.-Fremont, Calif.) also took six shots each. Cara Arnold (So.-Davis Junction, Ill.) made three saves to pick up her fifth win of the season.
Iowa Wesleyan will look for its fourth straight win on Saturday when it travels to Hannibal, Mo., to face Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) College. Match time is 3 p.m. IWC also is just two wins from tying the school record for wins in a season (seven) set in 1999.
