MOUNT PLEASANT – Mount Mercy College scored twice in each half and the Iowa Wesleyan College men’s soccer team opened its Midwest Collegiate Conference season with a 4-1 loss to the Mustangs Saturday afternoon at East Lake Park.
The Mustangs had four different players score goals and improved to 5-3-3 overall, 1-0-1 in the MCC. The Tigers dropped to 2-8 this season.
Enrique Cortina and Cole Richmond scored goals in the first half for Mount Mercy as the Mustangs took a 2-0 lead into halftime. The visitors added two more goals just 1:11 apart in the second half, as both Jose Alvarez and Drago Ceranic converted penalty kicks, the second coming in the 62nd minute.
IWC avoided the shutout when it scored with 30 seconds remaining in the match. Alex Marchese (So.-Toronto, Ontario) received a pass from Emil Yazdani (Sr.-Buenos Aires, Argentina) and scored to make the final score 4-1.
Mount Mercy outshot Wesleyan 17-5, including an 11-1 advantage in shots on goal. Goalkeeper Troy Osborne (So.-Sydney, Australia) had seven saves for the Tigers.
Iowa Wesleyan attempts to bounce back on Wednesday when it hosts William Penn University in a Midwest Collegiate Conference match Wednesday at 3 p.m. at East Lake Park.
