Moyers leads Tigers to fifth at Fun City Classic

BURLINGTON – Led by an eighth-place finish by senior Adam Moyers (Burlington, Iowa), the Iowa Wesleyan College men’s golf team finished fifth at its own Fun City Classic which concluded Monday at Spirit Hollow Golf Course.

The Tigers finished fifth of seven teams at the tournament, which was won by Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) College. The Trojans finished with a two-day score of 637, seven strokes ahead of Quincy (Ill.) University and nine strokes ahead of third-place Monmouth (Ill.) College.

IWC posted a team score of 667, opening with a 329 on Sunday and finishing with a 338 on the second day. Scores were higher across the board on Monday as the winds picked up even more from Sunday, with all teams except Quincy finishing the second round between 329 and 344 strokes.

Moyers led the Tigers with a steady two-day score of 161 that included scores of 80 on Sunday and 81 on Monday. He was one of three Wesleyan golfers in the top 20, as Mark Cleary (So.-London, England) tied for 12th and Nick Juskewycz (So.-Fairfield, Iowa) tied for 16th. Cleary opened with a 79 but fell off on Monday with an 84 for a total of 163. Juskewycz competed as an individual and started with a solid 80 on Sunday before shooting an 85 on Monday.

Emery McGraw (Jr.-Loveland, Colo.) tied for 25th with a total score of 171 (82-89), while Ryan Grun (Fr.-Kansas City, Mo.) wasn’t far behind, tying for 28th with a score of 174 (88-86). Jeff Zieber (Jr.-Cameron, Mo.) was 34th with a score of 178 (91-87) to round out those competing for the team.

Also golfing as individuals for the Tigers were Clint Phelps (Fr.-Quincy, Ill.) and Ethan Henderson (Fr.-Keota, Iowa). Phelps was 36th with a score of 190 (90-100) while Henderson was 40th with rounds of 104 and 99 to finish at 203 overall.

Ollie Armour of Hannibal-LaGrange took individual honors with a total of 149, including the top round of the tourney with an even-par 72 on Sunday.

The Tigers next will participate in the Ronnie Eastman Invitational hosted by Viterbo University on Oct. 4-5. The tourney will be played at the La Crosse Country Club in Onalaska, Wis.
