McVey paces Tigers to non-conference win over Culver-Stockton

MOUNT PLEASANT – Megan McVey (So.-Fort Worth, Texas) had 17 kills and the Iowa Wesleyan College volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak with a four-set win over Culver-Stockton (Mo.) College on Thursday at Ruble Arena.

The Tigers won in just their second home match of the season, defeating the Wildcats 25-20, 19-25, 25-23, 25-23. IWC got back over the .500 mark for the season by improving to 9-8 overall, while Culver-Stockton dropped to 5-13 on the year.

Wesleyan got another starring performance from McVey, who followed up her career-high 18 kills the night before against Grinnell with a team high in the category again while adding 17 digs. The sophomore now has reached double figures in kills in 12 of 17 matches and has topped 15 kills in seven different matches this season.

The difference in the match came when IWC toughed out wins in close third and fourth sets. The Tigers trailed 23-20 late in the third set but scored the final five points as Katie Jammer (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis.) served out the final four points. IWC also gutted out a win in a fourth set that had nine ties, finally taking the lead for good when McVey’s kill made it 21-20 and Jammer and B.J. Wagy (Jr.-Cedar Rapids, Iowa) combined on a block for a two-point lead.

Wagy and Brittany Janz (Jr.-Tonica, Ill.) both added 10 kills each, with Janz setting a career high in that category for the second time in as many home matches. Kendra Zimmerman (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis.) set the offense with 38 assists and added 18 digs, while Katie Leidl (Sr.-Esterhazy, Saskatchewan) led the team with 19 digs. Wagy also led the team with six blocks (three solo).

Culver-Stockton was led by Kayla Duncan with 13 kills. IWC hit .179 for the match, with 54 kills to 26 errors in 156 attack attempts. The Wildcats hit .143 with 45 kills and 23 attack errors.

The Tigers complete their stretch of three matches in three nights with a trip to Cedar Rapids on Friday to face Coe College. The non-conference match is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
